Best Flat Lap Machines for Beginners: All-U-Need 6 vs 8

Choose a flat-lap diameter around workpiece size, disc cost and bench space instead of assuming a larger lap is automatically better.

Quick answer: For most first flat-lap setups, choose the All-U-Need 6-inch when compact size and lower disc cost matter. Choose the 8-inch when you regularly work broader flats, larger freeforms or pieces that feel cramped on a 6-inch disc.

The same motor platform makes size the real decision

Both rock/mineral models use a compact 1/4 hp variable-speed direct-drive motor rated from 800 to 3,400 rpm. The practical difference is the usable working radius and the diameter—and therefore long-term cost—of the consumables you will keep replacing.

Why it made the shortlist

  • Same 1/4 hp variable-speed platform as the All-U-Need family, rated from 800 to 3,400 rpm.
  • Larger 8 in lap gives a 3-1/4 in working radius from arbor to rim.
  • Rock/mineral accessory sequence supports grinding, smoothing and final polishing.
  • Portable wet flat-lap format keeps the workflow compact compared with a multi-wheel cabbing station.

Know before buying

  • Larger discs cost more to replace than 6-inch consumables.
  • The extra surface area only matters if your workpieces benefit from it.
  • Like the 6-inch version, cutting rough still requires a separate saw or pre-cut material.

What a flat lap does well

FlattenBacks and broad faces

A horizontal disc makes it easy to establish a flat reference surface.

ShapeFreeforms and cabochon outlines

Use the disc edge and face deliberately while keeping the workpiece moving.

SmoothProgressively replace scratches

The included disc sequence moves from grinding to fine smoothing before polish.

PolishFinish on a dedicated pad

Polish works only after earlier scratches are actually removed.

The water system is simple—and part of the workflow

The standard All-U-Need water kit uses a clean-water cup with a control valve and a separate catch cup for dirty runoff. That keeps the machine compact, but longer sessions may benefit from an upgraded water-delivery setup. Regardless of system, wet grinding controls heat and captures debris; it does not eliminate cleanup.

Budget for consumables, not just the machine

The included set gets a beginner working immediately, but discs and polishing surfaces wear. The 8-inch machine earns its extra consumable cost only when the larger working radius solves a real workpiece-size problem.
